For years, luxury beauty followed a familiar formula.
A beautiful product was placed inside a beautiful cardboard box, often finished with additional plastic wrapping to protect the presentation. The packaging itself became part of what told the customer that the product was premium.
At APPLE & BEARS, we began to question that approach.
Not because we didn't believe in luxury. Quite the opposite. We wanted to understand whether luxury could be presented differently — without unnecessary packaging and without compromising the experience our customers expected from a premium British body-care brand.
The plastic was the first thing we couldn't accept
Even when cardboard gift boxes were the established choice, we never felt comfortable with the additional protective plastic wrapping that was often used around them.
To us, unnecessary plastic was environmentally difficult to justify.
The box might look beautiful, but if the plastic existed primarily to protect the box itself, rather than the product, we questioned its purpose.
That was an uncomfortable position to take when traditional luxury packaging was still very much the norm.
Then came the bigger decision
The real question was whether customers would still see APPLE & BEARS as a luxury brand if we removed the conventional gift box altogether.
We decided to replace it with a reusable eco-cotton gift bag.
It sounds obvious today. At the time, it wasn't.
We were taking away one of the things traditionally associated with premium beauty presentation and replacing it with something much simpler.
There was a genuine commercial risk.
Would customers think the product looked less luxurious?
Would the experience feel less special?
Would an eco-cotton bag be seen as premium enough?
We didn't know.
But we did know that it was more consistent with what we believed.
We chose responsible luxury
The decision wasn't about making APPLE & BEARS look less luxurious.
It was about asking whether luxury really needed unnecessary packaging to prove its value.
A reusable eco-cotton bag could still be beautifully presented. More importantly, it could have a life beyond the original purchase.
It could be reused for travel, toiletries, storage or everyday purposes rather than becoming packaging waste once the product had been opened.
That felt much more meaningful to us.
We decided that our definition of luxury should include the choices behind the product — not simply how much packaging surrounded it.
The idea continues today
The eco-cotton bag wasn't simply a change we made to our original gift packaging.
It became part of the way APPLE & BEARS presents its products.
Today, our Travel Sets continue to use the reusable eco-cotton bag, giving customers a practical piece of packaging that can be reused long after their toiletries have been enjoyed.
The same approach is used across our Body Care Gift Sets, where the eco-cotton bag replaces unnecessary disposable outer packaging while still giving the customer a considered and premium gift presentation.
For us, that is the important distinction.
The bag isn't packaging that is simply thrown away once the gift has been opened.
It is part of the gift.
Customers can reuse it for travel, toiletries, storage or everyday life, giving the packaging a useful second life.
This is how we believe responsible packaging and luxury can work together — without asking customers to compromise on either.
Presented in our reusable eco-cotton bag — part of the gift, not just the packaging.

At the time, the safer commercial decision would have been to continue doing what the established market was doing.
Cardboard boxes were familiar.
Plastic wrapping was familiar.
Customers understood that presentation.
We didn't know whether moving away from that convention would work.
But our belief in making more responsible choices was stronger than our desire to follow the established model.
So we stayed with the decision.
Today, the landscape is changing
Reusable eco-cotton bags are now much more visible across beauty, wellness and lifestyle brands.
We're pleased to see that.
We don't claim that APPLE & BEARS caused that change. Markets evolve for many reasons, and responsible packaging has become increasingly important to consumers and businesses alike.
But seeing reusable packaging become more accepted does give us something to reflect on.
A decision that once felt like a gamble now feels much less unusual.
And perhaps that is the most satisfying part.
Luxury is changing too
There is still a place for traditional luxury packaging, and many major luxury brands continue to use elaborate boxes and presentation.
But there is also a growing customer who sees luxury differently.
They want beautiful products.
They want excellent fragrance and quality.
They want something that feels special.
But they also think about what happens to the packaging after the purchase.
For that customer, luxury doesn't have to mean more.
It can mean better.
From eco-cotton bags to refillable body care
The eco-cotton bag was one part of a wider philosophy that continues to shape APPLE & BEARS.
Our approach has increasingly been about finding practical ways to reduce unnecessary packaging while maintaining the quality and experience of a luxury body-care brand.
That thinking can be seen today in our refillable products and 5 litre refill formats, designed to allow bottles to be used again rather than repeatedly replaced.
For us, these aren't separate ideas.
They are part of the same journey.
Reusable packaging. Refillable products. Practical sustainability. Everyday luxury.
A conscious definition of luxury
When we look back, the decision to replace the traditional luxury gift box with a reusable eco-cotton bag was a gamble.
We didn't know whether customers would accept it.
We simply believed it was the right thing to do.
Today, we're happy to see many more brands embracing reusable packaging and finding new ways to make luxury more responsible.
Perhaps that is how positive change happens.
Someone makes a decision before it becomes fashionable.
Others eventually discover that it works.
And something that once seemed unusual gradually becomes normal.
At APPLE & BEARS, we're proud that we were willing to take that chance.
Because we believe luxury should not only be about how something looks when you receive it.
It should also be about the choices made to create it.
